"They don’t fight the power, they are the power"
Village Voice

Poor Righteous Teachers consists of the trinity, Wise Intelligent, Culture Freedom and Father Shaheed. Critically acclaimed and worshipped by their peers and hip hop purists alike, Poor Righteous Teachers have always delivered a masterful blend of knowledge, bangin’ beats and pure poetry. What has always been the basis of good hip hop? It has always been about lyrical skill.
Over the years many different styles have developed, but none as impressive or distinct as the lyrical wizardry and powerful delivery of Wise Intelligent. Blending a unique style of Jamaican chanting and rapid fire poetry, Wise always delivers an unparalleled vocal assault.
"Culture Freedom and Wise Intelligent’s smooth, off-kilter voices are pitched against tracks that bounce like rubber and flow like lakes" said Billboard of their 'Black Business' album.

Throughout all of PRT’s albums, they have espoused the virtues of righteousness as embodied in the struggle of poor people around the world. Growing up in any ghetto in any country around the world is not easy. Urban decay, joblessness, homelessness, racism, drugs and death are just a few of the things that await the children of the world.

"Our basic premise is, you don’t have to sin to be successful" says Wise.
Culture agrees, "Our role in hip hop is to teach knowledge of self, to awaken people to the realization of themselves."

It is fitting then, that it was Wise’s conscious lyrics that led the Village Voice to declare "They don’t fight the power, the are the power."
PRT will always speak on and about the ghetto. Hailing from "Divineland" a.k.a. Trenton, New Jersey.
Wise says, "We talk about what’s real. We can’t talk about prairies and rolling streams, cause there are no streams or prairies in the ghetto."
Using many different styles from ska, hip-hop, reggae, and alternative, PRT appeals to a wide variety of fans. If ever a rap group was deserving of nationwide attention it’s The Poor Righteous Teachers.
